The Russian Federation and the Republic of Cuba have signed an important agreement, which will strengthen their cooperation in the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes within the framework of the 60th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The inter governmental agreement was signed by José Fidel Santana, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Environment of Cuba, and Nikolay Spasskiy, Deputy Director General of the Russian governmental consortium Rosatom.
The agreement will strengthen cooperation in the production of radionuclides and their use in industry, health, agriculture and environmental protection. It also provides for the joint development of medical radiation technologies and the training of specialists in nuclear energy, says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba in a statement.
The two countries will also cooperate in fundamental and applied studies on the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes, storage of radioactive waste and the sources used for ionizing radiation.
Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Environment of Cuba, José Fidel Santana, spoke Tuesday at the general debate of the 60th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) where he said «Cuba attaches great importance to the implementation of nuclear technologies in key areas for the economy and society, such as human health, with special attention to the cancer control program, food security, agriculture and environmental protection, with emphasis on management of water resources » .
